The Marvel fans adore it when an MCU superhero makes an appearance in another Marvel film, just like when Robert Downey Jr had a special cameo in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Interestingly, Tom Holland’s Spider-Man was intended to have a special appearance in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, but unfortunately, it couldn’t happen. Holland was supposed to share screen space with Benedict Cumberbatch. Read on to find out why things didn’t work out.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was released in 2022 and featured prominent actors like Benedict Cumberbatch, Elizabeth Olsen, John Krasinski, and Rachel McAdams. The movie made a whopping $909 million at the global box office.
According to a recent report by Cinema Blend, Graham Churchyard, the costume designer for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, revealed that Spider-Man was indeed a part of the movie initially, but the plans changed due to the devastating pandemic. “Spider-Man: No Way Home was supposed to come out after Multiverse [of Madness], and then with COVID [changes], it then came out before,” Churchyard revealed. He further added, “So Doctor Strange in his new costume and America Chavez were supposed to go into [No Way Home], and Spider-Man was supposed to come in- for a very brief cameo appearance into Multiverse.” Churchyard concluded, “And then, you know, COVID just shook it all up.”
Marvel has shuffled the release dates of their movies on multiple occasions in the past. This was not the first time they had to make changes.
For those unaware, the Tom Holland starrer Spider-Man: No Way Home was initially set to release in the summer of 2021 but got delayed to November and then ultimately December of that year. Similarly, the release dates of Doctor Strange 2 starring Benedict Cumberbatch were also rescheduled. The film was initially slated for a May 2021 release but had to be pushed to November and then finally March 2022 due to the impact of Covid.
Social media users quickly responded to the latest news. One fan expressed, “Covid destroyed everything that was good. It’s no surprise that Spider-Man was affected as he’s one of the best Avengers.” Another lamented, “That’s unfortunate.” Meanwhile, another user commented, “Covid ruined Spiderman’s cameo.” Another person shared their enthusiasm, saying, “Oh man, that would have been incredible! But I can see why Covid made things complicated. I’m still excited for the movie though!” One user mentioned, “It would have made the film better though.” Another person chimed in, “Covid really disrupted so many things in the MCU,” while someone else concluded, “We escaped a major disaster.”
