Move over “Hotline Bling,” because Drake has a new piece of jewelry to admire — and it’s the iconic ring that was owned and designed by the late Tupac Shakur.
The 37-year-old rapper purchased the one-of-a-kind bauble during Sotheby’s Hip-Hop Auction earlier this month. Sharing his excitement, he captioned a photo of his new accessory on his Instagram Story while promoting fellow rapper Travis Scott’s latest LP, “UTOPIA out now meltdown.”
The ring — featuring gold, rubies, and diamonds — was auctioned off by Sotheby’s earlier this week thanks to Tupac’s godmother and trusted advisor, Yaasmyn Fula. Drake’s bid made the ring the most valuable hip-hop artifact ever sold at auction — and the first to be purchased for over $1 million.
“This one-of-a-kind, custom ring was meticulously designed by Tupac and is among the final products of his boundless creative energy — a unique artifact from a period of time that is a testament to his enduring influence on both Hip Hop and global contemporary culture,” said Cassandra Hatton, Sotheby’s Global Head of Science & Popular Culture, in a statement on Friday. “We’re thrilled that this exceptional piece has entered a new chapter in the hands of another legendary artist.”
Tupac originally donned the ring for his final public appearance at the MTV Video Music Awards before his untimely death in September 1996 at the age of 25. The starring facet of the rock is the gold circlet, studded with a cabochon ruby and two pavé-cut diamonds to form the “crown,” which sits on a diamond-encrusted gold band. The custom ring also features a “Pac & Dada 1996” inscription on the band, a nod to his relationship with his fiancée, Kidada Jones.

Back in early 1996, Tupac embarked on a mission to create a jewel that would mark a new era in his life. Fresh from his 1995 incarceration for sexual assault and securing a significant deal with Death Row Records, the rapper aimed to commemorate his newfound phase. With the help of his godmother and trusted advisor, Yaasmyn Fula, Tupac spent months designing the masterpiece, ensuring every detail aligned with his vision.
Drawing inspiration from Niccolo Machiavelli’s political manifesto “The Prince” and medieval royalty, the crown’s design mirrored both power and regality. For Tupac, the ring became a symbol of his resilience, signifying his survival through a tumultuous year in a life that was no stranger to turmoil.
Fast forward to today, Drake, known for his suave style, has added this extraordinary piece to his collection. The rapper made headlines after purchasing the iconic ring for a staggering $1.01 million during Sotheby’s Hip-Hop Auction. The bauble’s historical significance resonated with Drake, who couldn’t resist showcasing it on his Instagram Story while promoting Travis Scott’s latest album.
Drake has never shied away from getting creative with his jewelry choices. Last year, he commissioned a necklace made from 42 diamond engagement rings, each symbolizing moments he contemplated proposing to his past partners. Yet, the rapper has been candid about his hesitation to walk down the aisle, prioritizing his work and not wanting to disappoint a partner.
As the iconic crown ring finds its new home with Drake, it continues to hold the legacy of Tupac Shakur, an enduring figure in the world of hip-hop and a symbol of triumph amidst turbulent times.
