In her career spanning more than three decades, Kate Winslet has portrayed various characters with different emotions. Throughout this time, she has worked with intimacy coordinators to make filming uncomfortable scenes easier for her. Surprisingly, in the HBO limited series ‘Mare of Easttown,’ Winslet took on the role of being the intimacy coordinator herself to ensure her co-star, Angourie Rice, felt safe and secure during an intimate scene.
During a Zoom interview with Vanity Fair in September 2020, Winslet expressed her desire for a safe and comfortable workspace while filming intimate scenes. She recounted the incident where she took on the responsibility of supporting Rice during the intimate scene between her and another character.
Rice, who plays Winslet’s daughter in the series, is Australian and portrays an LGBTQ character. Winslet, feeling protective as Rice is a year younger than her own daughter, stayed on set even though she had finished filming for the day. Speaking of her maternal instincts, Winslet said that she wanted to be there for Rice, especially since the camera operators were men.
Although the scene only involved kissing and tenderness in a car, Winslet mentioned that it can be challenging for young actors to discuss intimacy, even in a professional setting. She wanted to create a supportive environment for Rice, so she offered to say the things that Rice might not feel comfortable expressing. In the end, Winslet even positioned herself in the trunk of the car to make Rice feel more at ease.
Winslet emphasized that the camera operators were respectful professionals, but she wanted to ensure that Rice didn’t feel triggered or uncomfortable during the scene. Her actions were a testament to her motherly and professional instincts.
