Rapper Lil Nas X recently attended the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) for the premiere of his new documentary feature, ‘Lil Nas X: Long Live Montero’. However, the screening was delayed due to an anonymous bomb threat specifically targeting Lil Nas X because of his identity as a black-queer person, as reported by Variety.
The gala screening was scheduled to start at 10 p.m. at Roy Thomson Hall, one of TIFF’s prominent venues. The co-directors of the documentary, Carlos Lopez Estrada and Zac Manuel, along with editor Andrew Morrow, arrived first and interacted with fans on the red carpet. However, as Lil Nas X approached in his car, organizers were informed about the bomb threat and instructed him to wait.
To ensure everyone’s safety, TIFF security conducted a thorough sweep of the venue, causing a delay of 20 minutes. Once the threat was deemed not credible, Lil Nas X joined Estrada and Manuel on the red carpet, and the screening commenced around 10:30 p.m.
Although TIFF has generally been a safe event throughout its history, there was a tragic incident in 2018 when 10 people lost their lives in a deliberate act of violence. As a result, the organizers have taken significant measures to enhance security.
Talking about his documentary, Lil Nas X expressed his desire to make a lasting impact on audiences, particularly by addressing issues of representation. He aims to push the boundaries and create opportunities for black queer individuals, ensuring that the ceiling for their success is immeasurable.
Lil Nas X believes that black queer people play a significant role in shaping culture and driving societal progress. He hopes that their influence will inspire and empower the younger generation.
