‘Wonka’ director Paul King has expressed his astonishment at Timothee Chalamet’s singing abilities, comparing him to the legendary Bing Crosby. Chalamet portrays the role of Willy Wonka in the upcoming movie, which serves as a prequel to the classic 1971 film ‘Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.’
During an interview with Total Film, King praised Chalamet’s “beautiful singing voice,” noting that it reminded him of Bing Crosby. He also highlighted the actor’s versatility, as he seamlessly transitions between showstopper moments and emotionally charged scenes. King humorously declared himself a “crazed fan” due to Chalamet’s exceptional talent.
The film adapts Roald Dahl’s 1964 novel ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ into a new story. While it features various song and dance numbers, King emphasized that it should not be mistaken for a traditional musical. Instead, he described it as a movie with songs, maintaining the narrative focus and purpose behind the musical elements.
King further revealed that Chalamet secured the role of Willy Wonka without having to audition due to the director’s unequivocal belief in his suitability for the character. Additionally, King mentioned Chalamet’s pre-existing musical talent, as evidenced by his high school musical performances garnering significant attention on YouTube. This prior knowledge of Chalamet’s abilities solidified King’s confidence in his lead actor’s singing and dancing skills.
