Pedro Almodovar believes that Hollywood should hire more individuals from diverse backgrounds to write movies, emphasizing the importance of authentic voices and experiences in promoting true diversity in the film industry. He disagrees with the notion that only gay or Jewish actors should play gay or Jewish characters, stating that the essence of acting is to portray someone other than oneself.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter magazine, Almodovar expressed his views, saying, “So, for example, absolutely a heterosexual actor can play a homosexual character and vice versa. If Hollywood is so focused on representing minorities, such as Latinos, Asians, or people with disabilities, they should actually hire them to be the writers.”
Almodovar clarifies his stance, stating, “I want to make sure that it is clear that I’m very much in favor of minorities of all types being considered for casting in films and for being hired behind the camera, allowing them to tell their own stories.” He further highlights the lack of representation for Native Americans in Western movies, despite the genre often portraying them in unfavorable and unfair ways.
Since the release of his film ‘Pain and Glory’ in 2019, the 73-year-old filmmaker has worked on two short films, ‘The Human Voice’ and ‘Strange Way of Life.’ Almodovar explains that these projects have brought new excitement to his career and have helped him improve his English-language work. He believes that the short film format allowed him to experiment and feel like a first-time filmmaker again.
He concludes by considering short films as a form of practice, explaining that shooting ‘The Human Voice’ and ‘Strange Way of Life’ in English has prepared him for future English-language projects. Almodovar expresses his passion for every film he makes and looks forward to engaging in more exciting ventures in the future.
