From their debut, BLACKPINK has been an unstoppable force in the world of music. Consisting of Jisoo, Jennie, Rose, and Lisa, this group has broken numerous records since releasing their first mini album, which featured the songs “Boombayah” and “Whistle.” However, it was their hit song “DDU-DU DDU-DU” that became the first K-pop music video to reach 1 billion views on YouTube. But today, we have some lesser-known trivia about this iconic girl group to share with you. Keep reading!
It is undeniable that Jisoo, Jennie, Rose, and Lisa are the ones who have made BLACKPINK the phenomenon it is today. The quartet possesses a perfect balance of rappers and singers, each complementing each other’s talents. However, did you know that BLACKPINK was initially supposed to have one more member? Before their debut, BLACKPINK was actually a five-member group that included another member named Cho Miyeon, who is now a part of another girl group called (G)I-DLE.
According to some local media reports, YG’s Yang Hyunsuk initially planned to form a nine-member girl group. However, the final decision led to a group of only five members, including the original BLACKPINK members and Cho Miyeon. Yet, when the official debut announcement was made, Miyeon was no longer a part of the group, and the reasons for her departure were never disclosed.
Some reports also claim that Cho Miyeon was the central figure of BLACKPINK and was even positioned in the center during performances. She had formed a close bond with the other members before circumstances changed her fate. Fans have noticed that BLACKPINK always leaves a space for Miyeon during their formations, which is both heartwarming and heartbreaking at the same time.
Speaking of Cho Miyeon, she joined YG around the same time as Jennie did and trained with the BLACKPINK members for five years. Despite being part of the initial lineup, her debut was canceled just six months prior due to a dating scandal. YG spotted her in Japan with another trainee alum and decided to sever ties with her. After leaving YG, Miyeon joined Cube Entertainment and became a member of (G)I-DLE, alongside talented individuals like Jeon Soyeon, Soojin, Yuqi, Minnie, and Shuhua.
All’s well that ends well, and it’s safe to say that the current lineup is the best fit for both BLACKPINK and (G)I-DLE. As fans, we are absolutely in awe of these two K-pop girl groups.
