Sean Penn is notorious for his scandalous statements, which have landed him in numerous controversies throughout his career in Hollywood. However, the actor’s controversial behavior extends beyond just his words. In a shocking turn of events, Penn was once arrested for attempted murder and later escaped from his jail cell to Hong Kong.
Recently, Penn made headlines yet again, this time for his thoughts on the use of Artificial Intelligence in movies. The Academy-winning actor expressed his desire to have a virtual replica of his daughter and host virtual parties with his friends.
Returning to Penn’s legal troubles, it was reported by Sydney Morning Herald that the actor had dangled a photographer over the balcony of a ninth-floor hotel room in Macau. This incident occurred after Penn discovered the paparazzo in his room. Details of this incident were revealed in the actor’s biography, titled “Sean Penn: His Life and Times” by Richard Kelly. Penn was eventually arrested and placed in a cell with his personal assistant. However, the two managed to escape to Hong Kong from their cell. The Portuguese publication reported that Penn recounted how an intruder had lunged at him, prompting him to grab the assailant and hang him over the balcony.
In jail, Penn noticed that his cell door was ajar, which provided an opportunity for him and his assistant to flee. Eventually, Penn received a pardon from the Portuguese Government, which ruled Macau until 1999.
At the time of the incident, Penn was just 25 years old and in Macau to film “Shanghai Surprise” with his then-wife Madonna. The presence of the couple attracted significant attention from the paparazzi, leading to the photographer ending up in Penn’s hotel room. In fact, George Harrison, who was the executive producer of “Shanghai Surprise” and a former member of The Beatles, even flew to Macau to mediate the tension between Penn and the photographers.
Madonna herself later spoke out about the incident, describing the media in Macau as “unbelievably vicious and rude” during the filming process.
